The Indigo Cocoons - Wrap Around Baby Carriers

Our wraps are all 100% hemp, and dyed with only safe natural dyes.

As the wraps are made from hemp, they last much longer than the cotton wraps. This means that they should see you through at least 2 children, with fairly heavy use, and well cared for.

A Cocoon is the ideal way for you to carry your baby whilst ensuring support for your own body. Every wrap includes our Wrapping Guide, a reusable bag, as well as personal email support. The Cocoons are ideal as a baby back carrier, front carrier, and hip carrier. You will be able to carry your child in your Cocoon from their Birth Day until you are no longer able to carry them at all. If you can carry your child with your arms, you will be more comfortable using our Cocoon.

We offer 3 types of Cocoons. Our wraps come in Small, Medium and Large sizes. If you are unsure about which length is best for you, email me at indigococoons@yahoo.com, or consider having an in home demo so you can try diffrent lengths on and see which is more comfortable. We also offer assistance in learning to use your Cocoon, see below for more details.

Sizing

This can be a tricky thing. I have seen many sizing charts available, and quite frankly been baffled by most of them. Obviously I do not wish to recreate this confusion and irritation, especially as the size chosen can sometimes come down to individual preference. I do suggest you err on the side of caution- it would be most frustraing to be 15cm short of being able to use a really comfortable Tie. While I do offer some guidelines below, I do strongly suggest people in Perth try one on first. For those outside of South Western Australia, if a friend has a wrap, even a stretchy one, do try it on and research a common tying method like the ones shown below. Always leave slack to allow room for a toddler as you don't want the wrap to be too small and not get the most use out of it. Also if both parents/carers wish to use the wrap and of differing sizes, go for the longer one. While it may be a little bit more fiddly to tie the extra fabric, it is no great hardship to tie around your waist another time, or tuck long tail up.

Guidlines:

For people under 160cm Height and approx 57-60 kgs, a small size (4.5m) is likely to fit you well.

For people over 190cm, 90kgs a large size (5.5m) is your best choice.

For people between those ratios a medium size (5m) is best.

If your height weight ratios fall outside of these guidelines or you have tried other slings and they just dont fit right, not to worry, we do custom order for sizes. At this point in time the custom sizing applies only to Perth Metro, though in the near future we hope to be able to offer this outside of the Perth Metro Area.

The Simple Cocoon: This wrap is simple, and classic. It is undyed or decorated, so leaving room for people to dye it themselves if they so wish, making their wrap even more unique and personal. Price: $150.

The Decorated Cocoon: These wraps are dyed, and/ or tiedyed, or painted with Indigo Cocoons own designs. Most designs and colour combinations are drawn from the beautiful world we live in. Sunrise over the Ocean at Busselton, Moonrise over Yorkies knob in Far North Queensland. Sugarcane fields in late afternoon sun, the dry beauty of the Pilbara and Kimberleys. Thunderstorms at Kalgoorlie, the flowering native wisteria creeping up a pergola in the suburbs. The graceful sway of eucalyptus leaves in a summer breeze. Price: from $180

The Custom Made Cocoon: This is an option for those who want the wrap to be totally unique, or to alter on of the above wraps in some way. We will measure you and work out together the most comfortable length wrap for you, cut it to the agreed size exactly. Great for people who find it difficult to go with standard sizes. We can also show all the Indigo Cocoons designs, even those that are currently unavailable or not released yet, for you to choose from. Dolls & Toys

Play is so important to children of all ages, but especially the youngest. It is their work and how they process their world. They use imaginations and memories to create a rich and detailed fantasy land which is exactly what they need to do. Children do not need many toys at all and have no need whatsoever for the cheap, plastic, flashing button style toys that seem to abound. Toys that require imagination, thought, and can be used in almost any pretend play is exactly the kind of toys children will thrive with. Indigo Cocoons are now making a small range of Steiner inspired dolls, gnomes, fairies and angels. They are all handmade with love and care. It depends on materials and whimsy as to what is exactly available at any given time- sometimes an angel mobile, sometimes a felt ball with a bell inside. Look in the picture gallery until the shop is operating for exactly which dolls are available. However, below are some things you can expect to see most frequently:

Newborn Doll: Made of certified organic cotton fabric and wool stuffing, the dolls are small and simple. In true Steiner philosophy, the dolls should be faceless to allow for the widest use of imagination. I have chosen to sew on limited and expressionless eyes and mouth as studies show babies respond positively to face like objects, and faceless dolls make many adults uncomfortable. The hands are simply knots in the fabric, which could be wet down and refrigerated when teething becomes an issue.

Floor Puppets: This style doll is fairly central to Steiner philosophy and play for the young child. Again, the facial features are small and expressionless to allow a child to use the fullest extent of her imagination and her range of emotions. These dolls have more features and detail than a newborn dolls, but are able to be used in pretend play, caring and nurturing play, active play, storytelling and to snuggle up with at night. Some will be small enough to fit easily into a handbag or pocket and given to the child on your back to play with while you finish the shopping. These dolls are usually made from the same hemp as the Cocoons, and are excess from the dyepot. They are stuffed with sewing scraps and organic unspun wool. The faces are the certified organic cotton, and any hair is from mixed sources. In all things Indigo Cocoons makes every effort to minimise waste and puts as little as possible into toxic landfill. These are very eco friendly dolls!

Faerie/ Angel: Made from certified organic, unspun wool these angels and faeries are so very soft and gentle. A lovely soft and breezy addition to a babys mobile if a cot sleeper, or a pram/ car seat dangley toy to entrance baby.

Cuddly Doll and Sling: Lovingly handmade using certified organic jersey, and certified organic unspun wool. These are formed dolls with arms, legs, hair and clothes that can be removed. The facial features are more prominent, though still fairly limited and lacking in defined expression, for the reasons given above. A sling or mei tei can be made and dyed to the childs favourite colour so that it is easier for the child to care for her or his baby just like mum does. These are designed to be very easy for children, with some adult assistance, to put on and use at will.

These dolls are more for children over 2, and designed to be the childs own baby or other self. Boys this age and older tend to use dolls as another self, and process emotions, thoughts etc. Girls tend to use the dolls as a baby and role play a mothering role.  The doll and sling can be purchased separately.

The dolls can be ordered by emailing indigococoons@yahoo.com.au if you have any particular wishes for colouring, clothing styles. It also gives children an extra thrill if the doll and child have the same coloured hair and eyes, so if there is not a doll currently available to match your childs colouring, then please email with a request.

Floor Puppets

Clothes:

Usually made from the same hemp as our Cocoons and if dyed, we will still only use natural dyes. Others occasionally made from second hand fabrics. Little girls dresses and skirts from our own patterns, undyed and hand embroidered, dyed with patterns, vintage lace.

Aprons for play and cooking in very Anne of Green Gables style (indeed it was the inspiration!).

The hemp is cool, absorbent, wears very well and washes even better, and has great UV protection- up to 90%! If you are after something in particular in style, cut or colour then please contact us to discuss your needs. Clothes will be seasonal to Perth, but again anything special can be made. Once autumn closes in expect to see long wrap around skirts made from old jeans and warm fabric panels, over alls, and who knows what else!

Dyed Wool, Silk Fabric, Silk Yarn-

Ethically sourced, and organic where possible Indigo Cocoons has the great pleasure to dye these delightful materials with our natural dyes. Blues that seem glow, warming buttery yellows, gentle delicate pinks, earthy grounding browns, rich purples that just need to be touched.

Llama wool- This Llama yarn come from llamas roaming happily in the Strathbogie Ranges of Victoria, Australia. It's a high quality yarn that is easy for beginner knitters use. Llamas are pack animals and make very good pets. They are gentle on the ground they walk on and never over eat their food supply. These yarns are grown, and spun in Australia, and we always try to support local businesses first.

Organic 3ply Merino- Perfect for babies clothes it is soft and wonderfully warm. The natural dyes ensure that nothing synthetic or toxic is near that precious skin. The wool is grown and spun in New Zealand meetinging ogranic certfication requirements in every stage.

Baby Alpaca- Fairly Traded, certified Organic Peruvian Baby Alpaca is just divine. Dyed with out naturally fermented Indigo Vat, this yarn really does seem to glow in the light. So soft, it has been a genuine pleasure to dye the yarn.

Peace Silk Thread- Eri Silk, also known as Ahimsa Silk or Peace Silk, wait for the silk moth to emerge, whole, from its cocoon BEFORE the cocoon is processed for silk. Conventional silk is made while the silk worm is still inside and trying the metamorphasise into the silk moth. Suitable for Vegans, in all colours excpet for pinks and certain purples.

This silk is usually spun, not reeled as the fibres are short. They retain more air and hence have better thermal insulation properties than reeled silk.
It looks like wool mixed with cotton, and comes from India

Natural Nappy/ Body Cream:

Not just a nappy cream, this herbal balm is great for all skin. Lips, heels, elbows, eczema relief, any dry skin, small cuts scratches, insect bites. It's made for skin. Also, because our skin absorbs everything just as if we ate it, this nappy cream is literally good enough to eat. Made from simple ingredients and my personal philosophy of 'no junk allowed' it will soothe any troubled, dry skin. Non GMO Canola oil infused with calendula, comfrey and plantain herb is mixed with beeswax to provide a  moisturing barrier. Finally, a few drops of Lavender Essential Oil gives a wonderfully calming effect, as well as assisting with insect bites and stings and has anti bacterial properties. It also smells divine, and is hand made by me.

I have chosen to offer this nappy cream without organic ingredients as I know how expensive it can get when one constantly needs to buy nappy cream. However I will be offering the cream with organic olive oil soon, especially if i get a lot of people asking for the organic version.

Why did I go to all the effort of making this nappy cream? Simply put, I had no choice. My youngest daughter has unusually fragile and sensitive skin, resulting in open sores around her bottom for months while I tried almost every nappy cream on the market and none worked for more than a few days. Some were too dry, others too moist, some got absorbed too quickly, those containing zinc seemed to stop her skin from breathing. After a week of using my nappy cream the sores were healed. The only time they have come back is if I got lazy and bought a nappy cream instead.

Above From L-R: Organic 3ply Merino wool 'Sunshine', 'Mauve', 'Candy Floss', 'Sherbert Pink'; Silk Thread 'Mocha'.
