Dyes, dyes, dyes

August 4, 2010
It really is a lot of fun to use natural dyes. Everytime I put the fabric in the dyepot there is a little leap of faith that it will work out as I hoped. Did I add enough onion skins? Did I soak or simmer it for long enough? What will happen if it was too long? These questions are usually followed by the thought "oooooh I wonder what colour it would give if I did that?" After all, some of the biggest mistakes have given unexpected, amazing results. Just think of penecillin- if not for poor scientific methods we might not have discovered penecillin at all!

I am currently playing with tie dyes, and getting some interesting patterns to come out. I am also experimenting with all the different colours I can get from onion skins- you would be surprised! Greens, pinks, soft browns to a bold golden brown, to a warm chocolate brown.

I have also gathered everything needed to start painting some designs onto the wraps, but a bit of experimentation is required first. I will keep you all posted with pictures of the results.

Wraps currently available:

Photos of each available wrap can be found on the products page.

A crimson tiedyed small wrap available it is quite a mysterious, illusive wrap to me. It won't give up all its secrets yet, and is a strong colour at the same time.

A lovely, gentle purple tiedyed wrap, in a small size. This is a soft, embracing wrap. There is depth and variety there, but it is quite happy to snug you and your baby, while still being seen. This may be the last of this kind of purple for awhile.

A warm brown wrap, in a small size, reminding me of milky hot chocolate. There are subtle textures, lighter and darker areas giving a depth and subtlety to this quiet, earthy wrap.

In the dyepot is a medium sized chocolate brown wrap, the personality of whom is waiting to be unfurled, I am expecting something warm, rich, and delicious.

I have plans for a red/ pink medium size, as well as a medium sized earthy green which will probably have subtle olive tones. If it goes the way I plan, this wrap will be painted with a whimsical golden brown, reminiscent of clear honey.

Welcome!

Welcome everyone to an Indigos Musings.

In this blog I intend to picture new dyelots and designs as they happen, results of open days and stalls, any new information and anything terribly interesting about Indigo Cocoons.

I also plan to include thoughts and experiences on babywearing, parenting young children, pregnancy, birth, families and communities. Be prepared for gardening and environmental topics to occasionally creep in. These are all passions of mine, and inextricably linked to my mi...

About Me

I don't fit into any neat boxes. I have been told I was born 25 years too late and should have been a hippie living in a commune, this may or may not be true. I love my garden as well as the wild places in the world. I have had the blessing of living in and seeing many different places in Australia, from tropical Far North Queensland, to the dry world in the Pilbara. I try to see the beauty in every day 'mundane' things: the bright cheerful flowers of the weeds growing in my 'lawn' area, to the swaying Eucalypts growing on the median strips on our busiest roads. I am a passionate believer in the importance of strong families to make strong communities, which make strong families. Support and respect are central to helping make strong families. I want to support families as they launch themselves into parenting from pregnancy onwards. I strongly believe homebirth, with a registered midwife, is a good plan that should be available to all women who want it. I also know, from experience, that the best laid plans can mean nothing when a baby needs to be born another way. I know there is no such thing as a 'failure' when it comes to birthing OR parenting. All babies have their own plans, which can be the very opposite to ours and it can take time to realise that. I believe a womans right to choose the care for herself AND her child is sacred and not negotiable, even if I would personally do things differently. I love nurturing children and families, and want to show people another way to do that, which has largely been forgotten in the western world.
